Transformative Programs for At-Risk Youth

Every DSF program is designed with purpose — to provide structure, build skills, and create opportunities for young people in Columbia who need it most. All programs are offered free of charge to qualified participants.

Academic Tutoring

Academic Tutoring

Building Scholars, One Session at a Time

Mon – Fri | 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM

Our Academic Tutoring program provides individualized and group-based tutoring sessions to help students succeed in school and develop a genuine love for learning. Our certified volunteer tutors work closely with each child to identify their unique challenges and tailor support to their learning needs.

  • One-on-one and small group tutoring sessions
  • Homework help and test preparation
  • Reading, math, science, and writing support
  • College prep guidance for high school students

Youth Mentorship

Guiding Young People Toward Their Best Selves

Tue & Thu | 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM

Our Youth Mentorship program pairs at-risk youth with dedicated, trained adult mentors who provide consistent guidance, support, and positive role modeling. Mentors meet regularly with their mentees — building lasting relationships that help young people navigate life's challenges with confidence.

  • One-on-one mentor matching based on shared interests
  • Weekly check-ins and goal-setting sessions
  • Life coaching and career exploration
  • Leadership development workshops

Life Skills Workshops

Preparing Youth for Real-World Success

Wed | 4:00 PM – 6:30 PM

Our Life Skills program equips teenagers with practical knowledge and skills that schools don't always teach — from managing money to communicating professionally. These workshops are interactive, hands-on, and built to give youth real confidence as they transition into adulthood.

  • Financial literacy and budgeting basics

  • Conflict resolution and emotional intelligence
  • Cooking, nutrition, and health awareness
  • Digital literacy and responsible social media use

Arts & Recreation

Creativity as a Path to Confidence

Fri & Sat | 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM

Our Arts & Recreation program uses creative expression and physical activity to build confidence, teamwork, and emotional well-being in young people. From painting and music to sports and dance, youth discover new passions, develop discipline, and find positive outlets for self-expression.

  • Visual arts: painting, drawing, and mixed media
  • Music appreciation and beginner instrument lessons
  • Dance, movement, and physical fitness programs
  • Theater and public speaking workshops
  • Seasonal sports leagues and recreation activities
